| Obverse description | Central device features a seated chinthe (mythical Burmese lion-dragon), depicted in profile facing left with head raised, rendered in high relief with detailed scaly body, mane, and curling tail. The creature is positioned on a ground line within an open field surrounded by Burmese script characters distributed around the periphery of the coin. A toothed (milled) border encircles the entire design. The Burmese numeral date 1232 (corresponding to 1870 CE) appears in the exergue below the chinthe. |

Mindon Min established the Royal Burmese Mint at Mandalay in 1865, the first indigenous mint to operate in Burma in centuries, specifically to reduce dependence on foreign coinage circulating in the kingdom. The 1870 copper issues came during mounting British pressure on the Konbaung dynasty — within five years of this coin's striking, the second Anglo-Burmese War's territorial losses would further shrink the sovereign minting authority to which this piece belongs.
