| 背面描述 | The reverse displays a stylised rugby ball rendered in high relief at the centre of the silver inner disc, its characteristic oval form and panel seaming clearly delineated, surrounded by a wreath of curved panel segments evoking a globe motif referencing the international scope of the Rugby World Cup. The gold-plated outer ring carries the date 1999 in the upper arc and the denomination TWO POUNDS in the lower arc, with segmented rugby goalpost motifs flanking the design around the ring. The engraver's initials RD appear discreetly within the field. |

England hosted the 1999 Rugby World Cup bid but lost it to Wales, with the tournament ultimately spread across five nations — Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland, and France. The Royal Mint issued this commemorative ahead of that October tournament, one of several bi-metallic silver-and-gold proof strikes produced during the late 1990s as the Mint aggressively expanded its commemorative program. The gold plating on the outer ring was applied post-striking, a process that created occasional adhesion inconsistencies across the production run.
