The RNLI's Roy Barker I served the Alderney lifeboat station from 1984 until its retirement, named after a substantial private donation that funded its construction — a fundraising model the RNLI has relied on since the 19th century. Alderney's exposure to the treacherous tidal races of the Alderney Race, one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the English Channel, made its lifeboat station among the most operationally active relative to the island's size.
The States of Alderney have issued commemorative silver proofs under their own authority since the 1990s, despite the island's complex constitutional relationship with Guernsey.
