Alderney had only recently gained the right to issue its own coinage when this piece appeared — the island's autonomous currency program launched in 1989, making this among the earliest issues in that series. The Queen Mother turned 90 on August 4, 1990, and the occasion prompted commemorative strikes from several British Crown dependencies, each competing for collector attention in a crowded market.
The copper-nickel circulation version shares its specifications with the standard UK two-pound commemorative blanks of the period, sourced from the same Royal Mint supply chain.
