Shackleton's Endurance became trapped in the Wexell Sea's pack ice in January 1915 and was crushed and sunk by November of that year, forcing the expedition's survival story — rather than any Antarctic crossing — to become its defining chapter. No member of the expedition died, a fact Shackleton considered his sole measure of success.
