Additional information

Shackleton's Endurance became trapped in the Wexell Sea's pack ice in January 1915 and was crushed and sunk by November of that year, forcing the expedition's survival story — rather than any Antarctic crossing — to become its defining chapter. The Pobjoy Mint issues for the Falkland Islands have covered this centenary in several releases, with this 2017 piece marking the ship's loss specifically.

No member of the expedition died, a fact Shackleton considered his sole measure of success.
