Jersey Zoo — officially the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust — was founded in 1959 by Gerald Durrell specifically as a breeding sanctuary for endangered species rather than a conventional zoo. The lesser horseshoe bat, native to the Channel Islands, became one of the Trust's local conservation focuses as agricultural intensification steadily reduced its roost sites and foraging habitat across the British Isles. The 60th anniversary in 2019 prompted this series of issues, each tied to a species connected to Durrell's work.
