Reverse description The reverse, designed by John Bergdahl, depicts a medieval illuminated-manuscript-style composition commemorating the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta. At centre, a crowned King John is shown enthroned beneath a decorated Romanesque arch, flanked by an ecclesiastical figure at left raising a hand in blessing and holding a book, and an armoured knight at right bearing a shield and a scroll. The scene is rendered in a flat, stylised manner evocative of 13th-century manuscript illustration. The outer legend reads MAGNA · CARTA in medieval-style letterforms around the upper arc, with the commemorative dates 1215 – 2015 along the lower arc, and the engraver's initials JB appear in the lower left of the inner field.
