Chiloé, the large southern archipelago long isolated by geography and weather, maintained its own distinct political identity well into the 19th century — it was the last territory in South America to be relinquished by Spain, finally surrendering to Chilean forces in January 1826, nearly fifteen years after the rest of the continent had broken free.
