Guernsey issues commemorative bimetallics under its own authority as a Crown dependency, though the coins hold no currency status in mainland Britain. The Maypole itself has a contested history — suppressed under the Interregnum by Puritan ordinance in 1644, then enthusiastically revived after the Restoration, it became as much a political symbol as a folk one.
