Additional information

The 2025 date places this issue in the bicentennial year of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened on 27 September 1825 and is broadly accepted as the world's first public steam-hauled railway. George Stephenson drove the locomotive himself on opening day, pulling a mixed consist of coal wagons and passenger carriages — a combination that captured, in a single journey, the tension between freight economics and the passenger future that would define British rail for the next century.

The Royal Mint has leaned heavily on transport anniversaries for its gold proof program in recent years. This one has a more defensible claim than most.
