The British Indian Ocean Territory — administered from London with a civilian population consisting almost entirely of military and contracted personnel on Diego Garcia — has no indigenous coin-using public. Its "issues" are produced for the collector market, with no meaningful circulation history. This particular piece commemorates the Unknown Warrior interred at Westminster Abbey in November 1920, a burial that followed a deliberate policy of anonymity: the body was selected by Brigadier General Wyatt from multiple unidentified remains exhumed from the Western Front, specifically so no family could claim it as their own.
