Reverse description Central intaglio vignette at right portrays the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on 12 June 1898, with figures gathered on the balcony of Aguinaldo's Mansion raising the Philippine flag before a crowd assembled below. Issued to mark Pope John Paul II's February 1981 visit to the Philippines, this note was produced as a commemorative circulation piece rather than a purely collectible item — it entered general use alongside the regular 2 Piso series. Giesecke & Devrient had been printing Philippine currency since the 1970s, and their Leipzig facility handled the run. The papal visit itself was the second by a sitting pope to the Philippines; Paul VI had visited in 1970, making the country unusual in having received two pontiffs within a single decade.
