The K. Hauptlaboratorium Ingolstadt was a Bavarian Royal artillery laboratory — responsible for the manufacture and testing of ammunition and pyrotechnic materials. Notgeld issued by military installations of this kind is uncommon; most emergency coinage from the World War I period came from municipal or commercial issuers, not active military facilities. That a munitions establishment was paying workers in zinc tokens speaks directly to the coin shortage that gripped Germany by 1916 after copper and nickel were diverted entirely to war production.
