Mendoza was one of several Argentine provinces that reissued its own quasi-currency during and after the 2001–2002 convertibility crisis, when the federal government's freeze on bank withdrawals left provincial economies starved of circulating money. These emergency bonds — known generically as "patacones" in Buenos Aires Province but carrying their own local names elsewhere — functioned as wage payments and were accepted at face value by provincial tax offices and many retailers.
A 2007 date is late for this type. Most provincial scrip had been withdrawn and redeemed by 2003–2004 under federal buyback agreements. Whether this represents a late-dated replacement printing, a locally authorized extension, or a fiscal instrument with a different function than the earlier crisis notes would need to be confirmed against provincial treasury records.
