The Tesorería de la Provincia de Buenos Aires began issuing provincial quasi-currency — known as "Patacones" — in 2001 during Argentina's catastrophic convertibility crisis, when the provincial government lacked the federal pesos to meet payroll and supplier obligations. This 2 Peso note belongs to a later emission, dated 2006, well after the worst of the crisis had passed. By that point, most Patacones had been redeemed at par under a 2003 federal buyback program, making late-series issues comparatively scarce in circulation terms.
The 2006 date raises questions about purpose — likely a residual or administrative emission rather than active emergency currency.
