| Obverse description | The obverse is executed in black letterpress on white paper. At left, a circular vignette contains a classical female portrait in profile facing right, enclosed within fine lathe-work borders, with the numeral 2 at each side. The bank title 'Banco Nacional de la República de Colombia' arches across the upper portion in bold display lettering, below which the denomination 'DOS PESOS' appears in large text with the legend 'EN MONEDA CORRIENTE' beneath. The Banco Nacional de la República de Colombia had a troubled final decade. Congress voted to liquidate it in 1894, but the institution dragged on in a diminished capacity — issuing notes, managing debt, and slowly winding down — until the War of the Thousand Days erupted in 1899 and fiscal discipline collapsed entirely. Notes from this period were printed domestically by Litografía Nacional rather than through foreign security printers, a cost-driven decision that shows in the relatively modest production quality of the series.
The official stamp serving as the primary security feature reflects how thin the bank's anti-counterfeiting resources had become by this point.
