| Obverse description | Black intaglio print on white cotton paper. A central oval vignette contains a portrait bust of a distinguished gentleman in early 19th-century attire, flanked by two allegorical female figures in side vignettes — one to the left holding a palette and brush, the other to the right wearing a helmet. Banco Nacional was one of several private banks operating in Colombia under concession during the 1880s — not the state central bank that would later carry a similar name. The distinction matters for attribution. This 2 Pesos note predates the government's move to monopolize currency issuance, which came with the founding of the Banco Nacional de Colombia in 1881 and the subsequent squeeze on competing private institutions.
The American Bank Note Company had a near-lock on Latin American commercial printing at this period, and Colombian private bank issues of this era were typically engraved and printed entirely in New York before shipment south. PS677 is a Krause Pick Specialized reference, placing this firmly in the private Colombian banking series rather than any national issue.
