Villarreal's municipal council issued these small-denomination notes in 1937 as the Republican zone's access to Bank of Spain currency became increasingly unreliable. The co-issuer — Caja Rural U.H.P. — takes its middle initials from Unión de Hermanos Proletarios, the anti-fascist workers' militia slogan that became a political brand across Republican municipalities during the Civil War. That acronym on a rural savings institution speaks directly to how thoroughly the war reorganized local civil administration in the Valencia region.
