Riola is a small municipality in the Ribera Baixa comarca, and like dozens of Valencian towns it issued its own emergency paper money during the Spanish Civil War — the result of a severe shortage of metallic coinage that left local commerce effectively paralyzed from 1936 onward. These municipal emissions were technically illegal under Republican monetary law but were tolerated out of necessity.
The Gari Montaner reference is incomplete for this piece, suggesting it either lacks a confirmed catalog number or was recorded without full documentation. Small-town Valencian emissions at the 2 pesetas denomination are among the more elusive of the guerra civil locals.
