La Zaida is a small municipality in Zaragoza province, and this note is a product of the chaotic local currency explosion that swept Republican-held Aragon in 1936–37. With the banking system disrupted and small change almost impossible to obtain, hundreds of Spanish towns issued their own emergency paper — vales locales — to keep local commerce moving. The Consejo Municipal, the wartime administrative body that replaced the pre-war ayuntamiento in many Republican towns, was the issuing authority here.
La Tipografica of J. Sanz in Caspe was a workhorse printer for several of these Aragonese emergency issues, producing notes for multiple surrounding municipalities during the same period.
