Montenegro's 1914 coinage was struck in Vienna just months before Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia — and by extension precipitated the invasion that would effectively end Montenegrin independence within two years. These coins entered circulation in a kingdom already encircled by crisis, following the bruising Balkan Wars of 1912–13 in which Montenegro had overextended its military and treasury alike. Nikola I would spend the remainder of the war in exile, and the kingdom ceased to exist entirely by 1918.
KM#20 saw relatively low circulation life as a result.
