Montenegro was occupied by Austro-Hungarian forces in January 1916, and the K.u.K. Militärverwaltung — the military administration — faced an immediate currency problem: the Montenegrin Perper had no stable backing, and the local population distrusted it further after the collapse of the Petrović-Njegoš government. This note was part of a calculated bridging series, with the denominations expressed in both Perper and the equivalent Krone value to ease the transition toward Austro-Hungarian monetary integration of the occupied territory.
The trilingual crown notation — German, Serbian, Albanian — reflects the administrative reality of southwestern occupation zones where Albanian-speaking populations required separate acknowledgment.
