The design is typical of Burgundian-Netherlandish cross-type coinage struck at the Maastricht Vroehof mint. |

Philip the Handsome's patard coinage for Brabant was authorized under the monetary ordinances of the late 1490s as the Habsburg administration worked to rationalize a chaotic patchwork of regional currencies across the Low Countries. The Maastricht mint operated intermittently during this period — the city sat technically within the joint lordship of the Duke of Brabant and the Prince-Bishop of Liège, an awkward co-sovereignty that complicated mint rights and occasionally produced competing issues from the same town.
Philip died in 1506 in Castile, cutting short any further monetary reform. Issues from the 1500–1505 window represent the mature phase of his Brabantine coinage before production was disrupted by his prolonged absences in Spain.
