The Chaac Mool series was part of Mexico's broader effort in the early 1990s to compete in the international silver bullion market alongside the Libertad. Unlike the Libertad, these fractional issues drew on pre-Columbian subject matter — Chaac Mool being the reclining ritual figure found at Chichén Itzá and other Mesoamerican sites, long associated with rain deity offerings. The series had a short production window, and the 1994 date falls near its end.
