Surplus cash coins of the Joseon Dynasty were struck by agencies beyond the regular treasury mints — military bureaus, provincial offices, and government ministries each operated furnaces at various points during the eighteenth century, producing coins distinguished primarily by their reverse mint marks. The "surplus" designation reflects output beyond official quotas, often minted to fund specific administrative costs rather than general circulation. Quality and alloy consistency varied considerably between casting facilities, and attribution to individual bureaus remains contested for several varieties within this series.
