Obverse description Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square hole, reading clockwise from the top. The legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), referencing the Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) Treasury Department of the Joseon Dynasty, with 常平 (Sangpyeong) reading top to bottom and 通寶 (Tongbo, meaning 'current currency') reading right to left. The characters are cast in relief within a plain inner ring, with the field left unadorned in the traditional East Asian cash coin style.
