Obverse description Round cast bronze cash-type coin featuring a central square hole framed by a raised square collar, with four Chinese characters in traditional regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Circulating Treasure,' the standard inscription of the Joseon Dynasty's Sangpyeong Tongbo series. The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat field, with a plain raised rim encircling the entire obverse.
