The 2 Mun denominations of the Joseon dynasty were cast rather than struck, produced at numerous government foundries and military offices simultaneously — a decentralized system that makes attribution to a specific mint dependent almost entirely on the identifying characters cast into the coin itself. KM#909 was issued under King Yeongjo, whose 52-year reign was one of the longest in Joseon history and coincided with ongoing attempts to rationalize a chaotic currency system that had been plagued since the 17th century by chronic shortages and regional resistance to cash coinage.
