| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim, with the four-character legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo) arranged in cruciform fashion around the hole in traditional Chinese regular script: 常 (Sang) at top, 平 (Pyong) at bottom, 通 (Tong) at right, and 寶 (Bo) at left. The inscription identifies the issuing authority as the Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) Treasury of the Joseon Dynasty. The field is plain, enclosed by a broad outer rim. The coin is cast bronze, displaying characteristic patination with areas of green verdigris consistent with age. |
