Four Chinese characters are arranged radially around the central perforation in the standard cross pattern: 常 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (bottom-right), and 平 (bottom), forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sang Pyong Tong Bo), the denomination inscription of the Joseon Dynasty's Sang Pyong office. The characters are rendered in a bold, archaic regular script style within a flat, unadorned field, with a plain raised rim encircling the design. |
