| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within the field. Reading clockwise from top: 常 (Sang) at top, 通 (Tong) at right, 寶 (Bo) at bottom, and 平 (Pyong) at left, forming the inscription 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), identifying the coin as currency of the Sangpyeong Department of the Joseon Dynasty. The characters are rendered in standard script (kaishu) style, cleanly cast with plain inner and outer rims framing the field. |
