The shield is centrally positioned and occupies the majority of the flan. A circular inner ring frames the armorial device, separating it from the surrounding marginal legend. The peripheral legend in uncial Latin characters reads: IOHNA · D` · G` · D` · DE · GERDIN, identifying Johanna as Lady of Gerdingen by the Grace of God.
