| Obverse description | The field is filled with the quartered arms of Burgundy, displaying fleurs-de-lis and lions rampant in the respective quarters, rendered in a bold, medieval heraldic style typical of Low Countries coinage of the mid-fifteenth century. The shield is centrally positioned and occupies the majority of the flan. A circular inner ring frames the armorial device, separating it from the surrounding marginal legend. The peripheral legend in uncial Latin characters reads: IOHNA · D` · G` · D` · DE · GERDIN, identifying Johanna as Lady of Gerdingen by the Grace of God. The execution is characteristic of hand-hammered production, with some irregularity in the strike. |
