Joan of Merwede held the lordships of Gerdingen and Stein in the mid-fifteenth century, one of the relatively rare instances of a female secular lord issuing her own coinage in the Low Countries. The mite denomination was the workhorse of small daily transactions in this region, and minor lordships exercised minting rights jealously — often as much for the seigniorage revenue as for any broader economic purpose.
Van der Chijs's reference places this squarely among the harder-to-document issues of the Brabantine periphery. Surviving examples are sparse.
