Obverse description Multicolour letterpress design on a dark background with diagonal gold, teal, and black banded underprint. The central vignette presents two historical coin reproductions: the upper coin dated 1622 bears a sword and armorial device, while the lower coin carries the legend GOTTES FREUNDT DER PFAFFEN FEINDT. The denomination '2 MARK' appears in large red numerals at upper left and lower right, flanking the issuer title STADTSPARKASSE in bold diagonal lettering, with a historical inscription below reading 1622 LIESS DER TOLLE CHRISTIAN AUS DEM GERAUBTEN DOM SCHATZ OBIGES GELD SCHLAGEN and two facsimile signatures at centre right.

Reverse description Vivid multicolour illustration in an Expressionist woodcut style against a bold red and black background with diagonal gold-bordered bands at upper left and lower right bearing the denomination '2 MARK'. The central vignette portrays a scene from February 1622 in which the mercenary leader 'Toller Christian' departs with hostages, rendered as a group of figures in period costume — cloaked clerics and armed soldiers — striding across the composition. The artist's monogram 'D. DOMINIKUS' appears at lower centre, with the caption ABZUG DES TOLLEN CHRISTIAN MIT DEN GEISELN FEBR. 1622 along the lower margin and STADTSPARKASSE in diagonal lettering at right.

Comments

Paderborn's municipal savings bank joined the wave of Kleingeldersatz emergency issues in 1920, when the postwar coin shortage left German towns scrambling to print their own fractional substitutes. The Ruhfus press in Dortmund was a workhorse for Westphalian notgeld commissions during this period, turning out runs for dozens of municipalities across the region.

The DeNG reference suffix variants (.3-5/5) indicate at least three catalogued typographic or color distinctions within the series — minor but meaningful to specialists tracking the full run.
