Hannoversch Münden housed captured Allied officers during the First World War, and the camp administration issued this linen token currency to prevent German Reich coinage from accumulating among prisoners — a practical concern shared by nearly all German officer camps of the period. The use of woven fabric rather than paper or cardboard is relatively uncommon in the German PoW series; most camp issues ran to simple printed pasteboard or Lagergeld on thin stock.
Officer camps operated under different Geneva Convention provisions than other-ranks facilities, which meant prisoners had purchasing privileges within the camp canteen — hence the need for a functioning internal currency at all.
