The Darlehenskassenscheine — literally "loan treasury notes" — were emergency small-denomination currency authorized in August 1914 within days of the war declaration, explicitly designed to replace silver coinage that was being hoarded by a nervous public. The Reichsschuldenverwaltung issued them under the Darlehenskassengesetz rather than through the Reichsbank, a jurisdictional distinction that mattered legally even if the public largely ignored it.
Pick 54 is distinguished from the nearly identical Pick 52 by its red underprint and red embossed seal — earlier states of this note were issued without the underprint. The red seal variant was introduced as a precaution against counterfeiting, which had already become a problem by late 1914.
