Malta's 1989 series marked a significant redesign from the previous generation of lira notes, with De La Rue retaining the contract they had held for Maltese currency since independence. The 2 Liri sits in the middle of a four-denomination set — 1, 2, 5, and 10 — all issued within the same window and sharing a unified format and security philosophy that now looks sparse against later issues.
The watermark is the sole mechanical security feature on this type, which became a genuine vulnerability by the mid-1990s as counterfeiting technology improved. The series was progressively withdrawn ahead of the more secure 1994 issues.
