Both the inner circle and the outer bimetallic ring are decorated with a geometric design of intersecting lines. The inscription 'ЛЕВА' in Cyrillic script appears along the lower portion of the inner circle, with the lettering spanning across the boundary between the two zones. Bulgaria assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time in January 2018 — the commemoration landing exactly a decade after the country's 2007 accession. The six-month presidency was a significant administrative undertaking for a relatively new member state, and the Bulgarian National Bank issued this piece to mark it.
