Issued by the Ustaše-controlled Independent State of Croatia (NDH), a puppet regime installed by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy following the April 1941 invasion and dismemberment of Yugoslavia. The NDH minted this zinc coinage almost immediately after proclamation — a deliberate act of administrative legitimacy as much as economic necessity. Zinc was imposed by material reality; wartime aluminum and nickel allocations were controlled by Berlin, leaving occupied and allied states with whatever base metals remained available.
The NDH collapsed in May 1945. Circulation of this issue was accordingly brief.
