Papua New Guinea adopted polymer for its lower denominations relatively early, and this note was part of a broader push by the Bank of Papua New Guinea to address the chronic durability problems that had plagued cotton-paper issues in the country's humid, high-rainfall environment. Notes in active circulation there deteriorate faster than in most tropical economies due to both climate and handling patterns in informal markets.
