| Obverse description | Central device consisting of the VEIC monogram — the interlocked letters E, I, and C — enclosed within a heart-shaped cartouche surmounted by a cross, the whole forming the distinctive cipher of the English East India Company as used at Bencoolen. The date 1783 is divided and arranged around the central device, with '17' at lower left and '83' at lower right. The field is plain and the coin exhibits a reeded border running along the rim. |
