Kumihama was a minor coastal domain in Tango Province — present-day northern Kyoto Prefecture — and its Commerce Office (商法會所) was one of hundreds of quasi-official local trading bodies that sprang up during the Meiji Restoration's chaotic opening months. These domain-level offices issued paper scrip primarily to manage rice transactions and local debt, not as general currency. The 2 kanmon denomination reflects the older copper-cash counting system still in use at domain level even as the new Meiji government was already planning to abolish it entirely.
Within four years, the currency unification reforms of 1871–72 rendered all such domain scrip worthless for exchange purposes. Survival rate for Kumihama issues is extremely low.
