Kwangtung Province maintained its own silver coinage well into the Republican period largely because the Canton mint operated with a degree of autonomy that the central Beiyang government in Beijing was never fully able to curtail. By 1924, the province was effectively under the control of the Guangzhou-based Nationalist movement, and local coinage continued as a practical necessity given the chronic shortage of small-denomination silver in the Pearl River Delta trade economy.
The 1924 date places this piece squarely in the period between Sun Yat-sen's return to Canton and the reorganization of the Nationalist Party under Soviet advisory influence.
