Against a dark upper field, the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine is prominently displayed at center, flanked by the semicircular legend of the National Bank of Ukraine in Cyrillic and the mint logo of the National Bank of Ukraine's Banknote Printing and Minting Works. The lower light field bears mathematical diagrams and formula fragments referencing the theory of nonlinear oscillations and theoretical physics. The denomination 2 HRYVNI appears at bottom center, with the issue year 2009 positioned to the lower left. |

Boholyubov — properly Mykola Mykolayovych Boholyubov — was one of the most decorated theoretical physicists of the Soviet era, his work on superconductivity and quantum field theory earning him the Lenin Prize, the Stalin Prize three times over, and a remarkable degree of institutional insulation that allowed him to operate across both Moscow and Kyiv scientific establishments simultaneously. Ukraine's commemorative 2 hryvni series, issued by the National Bank beginning in the 1990s, used bimetallic nickel brass planchets to distinguish these collector issues from ordinary circulation coinage. This coin appeared in 2009, the centenary of Boholyubov's birth.
