| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse depicts the modern building of Kharkiv National University at the upper portion of the coin field, while a mirror image of the university's historic old building occupies the lower portion, creating a symmetrical architectural composition. A circular inscription surrounding the design identifies the institution by its full official name, concluding with the commemorative anniversary notation of 200 years. The juxtaposition of old and new buildings reflects the university's historical continuity. |

Kharkiv National University — formally V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University — was founded in 1804 by the initiative of local nobility rather than by imperial decree, making it one of the few pre-Soviet universities in Ukraine with a genuinely civic rather than state-directed origin. The 2004 coin marks its bicentennial exactly. Karazin himself was a controversial figure: an advisor to Alexander I who later fell from favor and was briefly exiled for his persistent petitioning of the crown.
