Reverse description The reverse depicts the modern building of Kharkiv National University at the upper portion of the coin field, while a mirror image of the university's historic old building occupies the lower portion, creating a symmetrical architectural composition. A circular inscription surrounding the design identifies the institution by its full official name, concluding with the commemorative anniversary notation of 200 years. Additional information

Kharkiv National University — formally V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University — was founded in 1804 by the initiative of local nobility rather than by imperial decree, making it one of the few pre-Soviet universities in Ukraine with a genuinely civic rather than state-directed origin. The 2004 coin marks its bicentennial exactly. Karazin himself was a controversial figure: an advisor to Alexander I who later fell from favor and was briefly exiled for his persistent petitioning of the crown.
