Ukraine's "Flora and Fauna" bimetallic and base-metal wildlife series launched in the mid-1990s as one of the newly independent nation's first sustained collector programs, and the Garden Dormouse issue belongs to that early run. The dormouse itself is a genuinely uncommon animal in Ukraine — largely restricted to deciduous woodland in the Carpathian foothills — which gave the National Bank reasonable grounds for the inclusion.
Nickel brass of this period from the Lugansk Mint occasionally shows uneven planchet coloration, a known production inconsistency rather than post-mint damage.
