Breda was seized by Spanish forces in 1577 when a small party of soldiers concealed themselves in a peat barge — the so-called "Turfschip van Breda" — and gained entry to the castle. The city's subsequent occupation by Spanish troops under the Duke of Parma created the military necessity for emergency coinage, as normal supply chains collapsed and the city required a functioning monetary supply within its walls.
Siege issues of the Dutch Revolt are among the most historically loaded of all emergency coinages. Delmonte's catalogue remains the primary reference for these types, and genuine examples are routinely challenged on authenticity given the volume of later imitations.
